Bruce was my first attempt at something different from a faerie, and I had great fun making him, as I could let my imaginations run wild...
As with my other creations I first started with the head, using the same technique as before... See HEAD TUTORIAL.
This time though I had to exaggerate his features, adding big teeth, warts, a big nose... You name it Bruce got it... Alot of detail had to go into Bruces face, so I took my time.
Unlike my other creations I decided to bake Bruces head before starting on his body... This was so that I did not damage any of the detailing I had done.
The body again was made the same as before with an armature and core base, cover then with clay... I roughly had a idea of what Bruce would be like and I new I had to make him look strong.... Using visual reference from anatomy books, I built his torso up...
See TORSO TUTORIAL.
Once happy I attached the body to the head and blended in the neck, so that there was no visible seam... I then re-baked the whole
thing again. With the head and torso both hard, I could work more firmly... Adding first the arms then the legs, and baking in-between each stage. Once everything was finished, baked, and cooled, I could start adding Bruces final look... Which was created by building up the skin tones, by Painting on different shade of Brown, cream, and yellow... I sealed the Acrylic paint with a matt varnish, which gave Bruces skin the look of leather. I added tuffs of mohair, to his arms, head, gave him some piercing, and finally covered his modesty with a loin cloth.... Now that the main figure was finished, I could work on his adornments.......... His axe, staff, cage, and last but not least, his sack of caught faeries. Bring Bruce the Faerie Catching Troll to life.
